At the invitation of the Cape Verdean Ministry of Culture, “SOME KIND OF FUNNY PORTO RICAN?”:A Cape Verdean American Story, premieres Friday, July 4, Praia, São Tiago, at the Palácio da Cultura-Ildo Lobo and Monday, July 7 in Mindelo, São Vicente at the Centro Cultural do Mindelo. The Cape Verde premiere marks the 10th anniversary of SPIA Media Productions, Inc., founded in 1998 by Claire Andrade-Watkins.

As the city explores the future of the city’s waterfront this week, a surprising player has emerged from obscurity to enter the discussions: the long-gone Cape Verdean population of Fox Point.

The Cape Verdean Subcommittee of the R.I. Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission is interested in keeping the Providence waterfront area open to the public. The committee supports the use of public land by future generations of Rhode Islanders and to ensure the preservation of the history and culture of the previously displaced Cape Verdean community in Fox Point.

“Some Kind of Funny Porto Rican?” has been selected to compete for the Paul Robeson Diaspora Prize at the XX Annual FESPACO (Panafrican Film Festival) on Feb. 23, 2007.

FESPACO is the largest and most important African film festival in the world; close to 1,000,000 people will converge on Ouagadougou between February 23 and March 3 for the film competitions, screenings and related activities organized around the theme of “African Cinema and Cultural Diversity.”
